About Mr. Shariff

Mr Umar Shariff is a Consultant General and Colorectal Surgeon at Good Hope Hospital, University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust, and The Priory and Edgbaston Hospitals.

Mr Shariff studied medicine at the University of Sheffield graduating MB ChB in 2003. During this time he also attained an intercalated BSc (Neurosciences) at Imperial College, University of London. Upon completion of house officer posts he became an anatomy lecturer at the University of Sheffield.

Mr Shariff completed specialist General and Colorectal Surgery training in South Yorkshire and the West Midlands. He was granted a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 2015. During training he undertook a period of research, receiving an Ethicon EndoSurgery educational grant as a clinical research fellow at the Royal London and Princess Grace Hospitals. He was awarded an MD for his thesis on cognitive surgical skills training in colorectal surgery, presenting his research nationally and internationally.

He was also awarded overseas travelling fellowships to New York and Boston (Royal Society of Medicine), Washington D.C, USA and Erlangen, Germany to augment his skills in peritoneal malignancy and complete mesocolic excision (CME) surgery for bowel cancer.

Prior to taking up his consultant position, Mr Shariff completed Advanced Colorectal and Peritoneal Malignancy Fellowships at the internationally renowned Basingstoke Peritoneal Malignancy Institute and Mount Sinai & St Margaret Cancer Hospitals, Toronto, Canada. He was subsequently awarded the European Peritoneal Surface Oncology (ESPSO) certification in 2018. He now routinely performs Cytoreductive Surgery and HIPEC (heated intra-peritoneal chemotherapy) operations as part of an established team with a national referral service, one of only three commissioned units that perform this type of surgery in England.

His principal areas of clinical interest are in treatment of bowel cancer and the management of patients with peritoneal metastases (spread) from appendix and colorectal cancers. Mr Shariff is an experienced laparoscopic surgeon trained in minimal access (keyhole) surgery for colorectal cancer and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). He has extensive experience in the management of various colorectal and general surgical conditions. He is also a JAG-accredited endoscopist, specialising in colonoscopy and polyp removal. Mr Shariff has held numerous management roles and currently leads the weekly colorectal cancer and peritoneal multi-disciplinary (MDT) meeting.

He has published widely and presented nationally and internationally in the field of colorectal surgery, peritoneal malignancy and surgical training. Currently, he is involved in collaborative research and his clinical research interests also involve trainee and patient-related multimedia resources. He has been instrumental in the development of innovative training tools for surgical trainees and an online patient peritoneal pathway resource. He has a key interest in teaching, and is a faculty member for the Royal College of Surgeons Basic Surgical Skills (BSS) and Care of the Critically Ill Surgical Patient (CCrISP) courses.

Mr Shariff’s primary aim for his patients is to deliver a first-class service with thorough consultation to any investigation and/or treatment that may be required. An evidence-based, patient-centred approach is at the heart of his practice. Since his appointment, Mr Shariff has been a member of colorectal teams receiving two UHB trust ‘Best in Clinical Care’ Building Healthier Lives awards in 2018 and 2019.
