About Mr. Leo
Mr Alex Leo is a consultant general, colorectal and pelvic floor surgeon at The Royal London Hospital. He has a specialist interest in pelvic floor disorders, proctology and other areas of benign
colorectal pathology as well as laparoscopy, non-invasive surgical procedures .
He graduated at the University of Perugia, Italy in 2008. He completed his trainee in General and Colorectal Surgery in 2015 gaining a diploma with honours and an MD in General Surgery from the University of Udine, Italy. Motivated by the international reputation of St Mark’s Hospital, Mr Leo has then moved to the UK and he has worked at St Mark’s from 2015 to 2018 as Specialist Registrar having a fellowship with Miss Carolynne Vaizey in Physiology and Neuromodulation. In 2020 he has achieved an MD at Imperial College of London, discussing a thesis on the diagnosis and treatment of faecal incontinence and preserves a strong research interest in this field. He has published around 50
peer reviewed papers and textbook chapters on pelvic floor and colorectal disorders. He has presented widely on these subjects at national and international meetings. In 2020 he was
appointed as Consultant General and Colorectal Surgeon at Northwick Park supporting the pelvic floor unit at St Mark’s Hospital. In 2023, Mr Leo was awarded as Fellow of European Board of Surgery in Coloproctology (FEBS) by the European Society of Colorectal Surgery (ESCP): this is one of the highest qualifications in surgery, confirming skills and knowledge in Coloproctology. He then moved to The Royal London Hospital where he leads the Pelvic Floor Department and continues his career as colorectal surgeon in central London.

About Mr. Radley
Mr. Radley graduated from the University of Birmingham in 1985 with Honours in Surgery. After completing his house officer posts in Birmingham, he assumed the role of a lecturer in anatomy at the University of Birmingham. Following Senior House Officer training, he engaged in research on colorectal cancer, submitting a thesis that earned him an MD from the University of Birmingham.
His journey continued with registrar surgical training in general and colorectal surgery in the West Midlands, culminating in specialized training at St. Marks Hospital in London. Simultaneously, he embarked on an overseas traveling fellowship to the USA, studying rectal cancer treatments with grants from the International College of Surgeons and Royal College of Surgeons of England.
Upon completing his training, Mr. Radley assumed the position of Senior Lecturer in Colorectal Surgery at Birmingham University and the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. In April 2002, he became an NHS Consultant Colorectal Surgeon. His extensive publications, particularly on functional bowel disorders, showcase his contribution to the field. He served as the Clinical Service Lead for Gastro-intestinal Surgery at University Hospital Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust, playing a pivotal role in introducing laparoscopic colorectal surgery and enhanced surgical recovery protocols.

About Mr. Richardson
Mr. Jonathan J.R. Richardson is an experienced Colorectal and General Surgeon practising in the West Midlands of England.
Mr. Richardson was appointed as a Consultant Colorectal and General Surgeon at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust, in 2017.
Mr. Richardson has clinical interests across the full range of colorectal and general surgery. He has a major interest in the management of colorectal cancer and the use of laparoscopic surgical techniques. He is a high-volume colorectal cancer resection surgeon with excellent patient outcomes. He also undertakes complex surgery for the management of locally advanced colorectal cancer. Mr. Richardson is a core member of the Colorectal Cancer Multi-disciplinary Team and is the Clinical Lead for Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS). Mr. Richardson holds the management position of Audit Lead for the Surgical Directorate and strives to attain optimal patient outcomes.
Mr. Richardson has undertaken a period of research and he was the Chief Investigator of a translational research study which successfully characterised systemic neutrophil function in patients undergoing colorectal cancer resection. He presented the results of his research internationally and was awarded the prestigious European Society for Surgical Research Best Clinical Research Award. He was awarded an MD from the University of Birmingham for his thesis submission and his research has been published in peer reviewed medical journals.
Mr. Richardson is heavily involved in clinical research. He is the Principal Investigator and Co-investigator of multiple NIHR portfolio studies and is consistently one of the highest recruiters to clinical trials at University Hospitals Birmingham. In addition, Mr. Richardson has published and presented widely on a variety of colorectal and general surgical conditions contributing to the surgical academic literature.
Mr. Richardson has an extensive experience in organising and delivering teaching. During surgical training he formalised his teaching skills and he was awarded a Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education. In his current Consultant position, Mr. Richardson is the Lead Undergraduate Surgical Tutor and a Senior Clinical Examiner at the University of Birmingham and he has been appointed as an Honorary Associate Professor at the University of Birmingham. About Mr. Shariff
Mr Umar Shariff is a Consultant General and Colorectal Surgeon at Good Hope Hospital, University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust, and The Priory and Edgbaston Hospitals.
Mr Shariff studied medicine at the University of Sheffield graduating MB ChB in 2003. During this time he also attained an intercalated BSc (Neurosciences) at Imperial College, University of London. Upon completion of house officer posts he became an anatomy lecturer at the University of Sheffield.
Mr Shariff completed specialist General and Colorectal Surgery training in South Yorkshire and the West Midlands. He was granted a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 2015. During training he undertook a period of research, receiving an Ethicon EndoSurgery educational grant as a clinical research fellow at the Royal London and Princess Grace Hospitals. He was awarded an MD for his thesis on cognitive surgical skills training in colorectal surgery, presenting his research nationally and internationally.
He was also awarded overseas travelling fellowships to New York and Boston (Royal Society of Medicine), Washington D.C, USA and Erlangen, Germany to augment his skills in peritoneal malignancy and complete mesocolic excision (CME) surgery for bowel cancer.
Prior to taking up his consultant position, Mr Shariff completed Advanced Colorectal and Peritoneal Malignancy Fellowships at the internationally renowned Basingstoke Peritoneal Malignancy Institute and Mount Sinai & St Margaret Cancer Hospitals, Toronto, Canada. He was subsequently awarded the European Peritoneal Surface Oncology (ESPSO) certification in 2018. He now routinely performs Cytoreductive Surgery and HIPEC (heated intra-peritoneal chemotherapy) operations as part of an established team with a national referral service, one of only three commissioned units that perform this type of surgery in England.
His principal areas of clinical interest are in treatment of bowel cancer and the management of patients with peritoneal metastases (spread) from appendix and colorectal cancers. Mr Shariff is an experienced laparoscopic surgeon trained in minimal access (keyhole) surgery for colorectal cancer and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). He has extensive experience in the management of various colorectal and general surgical conditions. He is also a JAG-accredited endoscopist, specialising in colonoscopy and polyp removal. Mr Shariff has held numerous management roles and currently leads the weekly colorectal cancer and peritoneal multi-disciplinary (MDT) meeting.
He has published widely and presented nationally and internationally in the field of colorectal surgery, peritoneal malignancy and surgical training. Currently, he is involved in collaborative research and his clinical research interests also involve trainee and patient-related multimedia resources. He has been instrumental in the development of innovative training tools for surgical trainees and an online patient peritoneal pathway resource. He has a key interest in teaching, and is a faculty member for the Royal College of Surgeons Basic Surgical Skills (BSS) and Care of the Critically Ill Surgical Patient (CCrISP) courses.
Mr Shariff’s primary aim for his patients is to deliver a first-class service with thorough consultation to any investigation and/or treatment that may be required. An evidence-based, patient-centred approach is at the heart of his practice. Since his appointment, Mr Shariff has been a member of colorectal teams receiving two UHB trust ‘Best in Clinical Care’ Building Healthier Lives awards in 2018 and 2019.
